Zurich North America is seeking a Chief Compliance Officer. The Chief Compliance Officer is responsible for identifying, managing, and mitigating regulatory, ethics and corporate governance risks for Zurich’s Property & Casualty and Life businesses in the United States and Canada, and for Zurich’s Travel business unit globally to enable the business to achieve strategic and commercial goals in accordance with applicable laws and regulations and to protect and preserve Zurich’s tangible and intangible assets. The business set-up addressed by the role holder ordinarily comprises of several legal entities and branches which operate in a challenging global regulatory environment requiring occasional interaction with supervisory bodies. The business portfolio includes multiple complex lines of business offered to several customer segments. This leader is responsible to assist management to promote an ethics-based culture advancing compliance, to deliver practical solutions, implement and maintain policies, provide practical and value-added compliance guidance, drive compliance training and processes relating to Compliance Risk Universe, advance the stature of the Compliance function and provide assurance to management that compliance risks universe are identified and managed or escalate where they are not. This leader has regular interactions with Senior Regional and the Business Unit/Country management, and has regular contact with holding company level boards and /or audit committees. This role is a member of the Global Compliance Executive Team and is responsible for leading and contributing to global initiatives. The Chief Compliance Officer will act as a trusted adviser to the Board and Chief Executive Officers of Zurich North America and Zurich Cover-More. Depending on jurisdiction, the role may be designated by regulation as a “key risk taker” or “responsible person” role and therefore, be subject to exposure to higher levels of potential personal liability.       This position reports directly to the Group Chief Compliance Officer and will be based in our U.S. (Schaumburg) Zurich Office with travel expected.   

Key Accountabilities Include:

  • Deep regulatory expertise and experience across a prescribed but diverse range of compliance topics applicable to the business, its product portfolio, and its markets.
  • Considerable experience managing the compliance risks resulting from U.S. insurance regulation.
  • Demonstrates strong strategic orientation and a business partner mind-set, and able to execute a compliance strategy that enables Zurich to achieve its strategic objectives while protecting it from regulatory and reputational risk.
  • Proven track record of excellence in counseling and advising senior management.
  • Comfortable making decisions in ambiguous situations, has outstanding compliance and business judgment, and exhibits the highest degree of professionalism and ethics.
  • Proactively anticipates, identifies, and evaluates regulatory and governance risks and opportunities, and champions pragmatic and business-oriented solutions.
  • Is agile and always ready to pivot for the unexpected and find creative and innovative solutions as well as mitigating actions.

  • Appreciates how Sustainability impacts strategy and delivery and demonstrates a passion for advancing and supporting Zurich's Sustainability journey.
  • Understands common accounting concepts and principles, can read financial statements, and is familiar with other relevant Finance topics.
  • Proficient in budget development, forecasting and execution.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with a proven ability to synthesize and communicate complex ethical and regulatory topics to different audiences and stakeholders.
  • Has the right balance between an independent voice and a sensitivity to finding consensus.
  • Cultivates collaboration within Zurich and builds and maintains trusted relationships with senior management and the Board, as well as other stakeholders, such as regulators, industry organizations and other external audiences (credible participant in industry and peer-to-peer settings).
  • Unwavering commitment to integrity, ethics, and responsible business conduct.
  • Demonstrated record of successfully navigating through ethical, regulatory and/or governance challenges faced by global companies.
  • Strong cross-cultural competence and understanding, ideally with international working experience and/or education, and an ability to work seamlessly and enthusiastically with colleagues across disciplines, cultures, and jurisdictions.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or Juris Doctor and 15 or more years of experience in the Compliance area AND
  • Experience in developing, implementing, managing, and monitoring corporate compliance programs and working with code of conducts and ethical issues
  • 5 or more years of leadership experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience as a Chief Compliance Officer, Vice President, or Senior Leader within a global compliance function.
  • Experience managing U.S. insurance regulation initiatives.
  • Global experience including knowledge of common regulation
  • Proven track record in managing investigations, audits, and process reviews.
  • Working knowledge of the COSO framework and experience in developing or improving controls.
  • Proactive, open-minded leader with the ability to think innovatively and drive significant business impact.
  • Experience in building and implementing key strategies.
  • Strong skills in collaboration, conflict resolution, and influencing.
  • Experience in building and managing cross-functional teams.
  • Strong executive presence with the ability to interact effectively at all organizational levels.

At Zurich, compensation for roles is influenced by a variety of factors, including but not limited to the specific office location, role, skill set, and level of experience. Additional rewards may encompass short-term incentive bonuses and merit increases. We encourage candidates with salary expectations beyond the provided range to apply as they will be considered based on their experience, skills, and education. 

The compensation indicated represents a nationwide market range and has not been adjusted for geographic differentials pertaining to the location where the position may be filled. The proposed salary range for this position is $216,100-$378,300, with short-term incentive bonus eligibility set at 45%.
