The Director, Software Development Engineering provides overarching leadership for global Software Development Engineering teams and/or technical functions within their organization by serving as the direct manager for Software Development Managers that direct teams across a significant portfolio of products.

As a senior leader, you will be responsible for developing, implementing and representing the software development engineering programs as well as recommending measures to ensure the achievement of engineering objectives that align to the business strategy.

The Director, Software Development Engineering will continuously provide technical engineering guidance, expertise and advice on large, complex projects while leading and consulting on multiple strategic projects in partnership with Product Management, UX Design and other Technology stakeholders to advance technical delivery strategies. In this role, you will also implement best practices from the industry for the greater technical team across the Software Development Lifecycle.

About the Role

As a Senior Director of Technology you will:

  • Create and articulate a compelling technology vision

  • Lead global Engineering team by solving ambiguous problems 

  • Define success criteria and significant strategic initiatives for Engineering team and holds team accountable for delivery

  • Understand and makes decisions around budget and resourcing

  • Build and drive strategies in alignment with the Company's overall vision and business goals.

  • Consistently exercise independent judgment and discretion in matters of significance.

Sphere of Influence

Senior Director of Technology also:

  • Leads engineering managers and teams across the entire Product Line / Product Family

  • Persuasive and confident storyteller; presents effectively to stakeholders across organization 

  • Evangelizes, inspires, and is the Software Development Engineering spokesperson for the Portfolio across the organization

  • Influences decisions at all levels across the org, leveraging networks and partnering with executive level stakeholders to drive results

  • Ensures effective resourcing and partnership between product team, Software Development Engineering, QA and UX to drive incremental product improvements 

  • Provides guidance to the Software Engineering team and other departments in identifying product and technical requirements.

  • Works with project personnel to define standards and frameworks with regards to coding, programming and the general development of applications for multiple platforms.

  • Supporting point of contact and liaison between Software Engineering and other teams.

Delivery

Senior Director of Technology also:​

  • Ensures projects are envisioned, designed, developed, and implemented following industry standard methodologies. 

  • Directs implementation initiatives for new software products and applications. 

  • Coordinates software update process for existing applications and coordinates the roll-out of software releases. 

  • Supervises code quality, pattern adherence, and the overall maintainability of the application. 

  • Works with the Engineering team to implement new techniques that benefit the goals of the organization. 

  • Consults with management regarding project specifics and determine requirements, boundaries and priorities 

  • Collaborate with product vendors, architects, and business units to translate business requests into work items for the development teams to implement. 

  • Leads all aspects of the planning and designing of software and web applications, including new programs, improvements, and modifications.

  • Continuously researches new techniques with respect to coding technology and coding practices.

  • Supports development team deliverables to ensure alignment to deadlines, specifications, and budgets.          

  • Reviews and reports on project progress to leadership team.

  • Participates in procurement of services/solutions for the project.

  • Apply critical, non-biased and data-based thinking to help make core directional decisions that move toward the forecasted future

  • Ranks the importance of initiatives to achieve team and business objectives, recognizing not all work is equally “important” and “urgent”, and that some work will fall to a backlog for future prioritization

  • Continuously researches new techniques with respect to coding technology and coding practices. 

  • Identifies opportunities for change and develop plans for capitalizing on these opportunities

  • Creates an environment and a culture that encourages immediate response to problems and sets expectations and timeframe for resolution with customers or groups managing customers and manages escalated issues.

Leadership 

Senior Director of Technology also:

  • Builds and drives strategies in alignment with the Company's overall vision and business goals. 

  • Leads strategies and actions to overcome resistance to change and capitalize on supporting forces for change towards modernization initiatives.

  • Leads all aspects of the planning and designing of software and web applications, including new programs, improvements, and modifications. 

  • Provides guidance to the Software Engineering team and other departments in identifying product and technical requirements. 

  • Works with project personnel to define standards and frameworks with regards to coding, programming and the general development of applications for multiple platforms. 

  • Supporting point of contact and liaison between Software Engineering and other teams. 

  • Supports development team deliverables to ensure alignment to deadlines, specifications, and budgets. •Reviews and reports on project progress to leadership team. 

  • A positive attitude with a service delivery mentality.

  • Ability to work independently and supervise a diverse staff.

  • Ability to demonstrate initiative and strong technical knowledge.

  • Imaging system experience (preferably OnBase).

  • Ability to coach/mentor engineering leaders and team members to function as a highly effective team.

  • Enthusiasm for investigating and implementing new software tools/applications (off the shelf and internally developed).

  • Strong people management skills, proven success in recruiting, creating and motivating a strong performing engineering team.

  • Makes time-critical decisions while providing leadership, direction and oversight in developing project/program strategies for transitioning to new solutions/products.

  • Manages hiring, performance management, and training for management team.

  • Provides effective performance enablement guidance to team members and managers utilizing SMART goals, constructive feedback and coaching for improvement
