As a Scientist in the new business venture “FORS” you hold a pivotal role where you can disrupt MedTech and make a real difference for patients. In your role in the FORS Technology R&D team, you will be responsible to further develop critical aspects of the exciting Fiber Optic RealShape (FORS) technology, the foundation for the FORS venture. You will be a member of technology feasibility, advanced development and/or product development project teams. These teams develop new or improved technology options, create design concepts, and develop and release selected concepts into next product generations. This enables the use of FORS products and solutions in a growing range of medical procedures and applications, supporting healthcare professionals and improving patients’ lives.
You are responsible for
Defining scope and problem domain in a crisp and structured way: defining the problem with stakeholders and identifying key issues.
Creating well-defined building blocks / system options & scenarios for improving FORS navigation performance; choosing the optimal design, leveraging technology and contributing to/driving roadmaps; establishing control points (both IP and proprietary algorithms).
The design, realization and test of key (sub) systems, understanding and communicating consequences of the design on the architecture. Contributing/leading communication, from technical perspective, with relevant suppliers.
Contribution to the innovation strategies and roadmaps together with management and the business and building new competencies, on both personal and team level, or extend existing ones that have potential to contribute significant value to the business and its continuity.
Ensuring solid, up-to-date and usable documentation of the architecture and implementation thereof (design specifications, schematics, drawings, codes and writing test scenarios’ for the developed modules or components); using methods & tools for a structured approach.
Generating initiatives with regard to technological improvements and performing future-oriented studies in dialogue with other specialists, the emphasis in the position is on mastery of the professional field and shifting its frontiers.
Draws up personal/team schedule and reports on progress in a structured and methodical way and is responsible for keeping the costs of the activities in line with the calculated budget and delivering input in the planning process to the project leader/program manager.

Image Guided Therapy (IGT) is a business segment within Philips, focused on diagnostics and therapy in the cardio-vascular domain. IGT includes the imaging guidance systems and solutions business and the therapy delivery devices business. The overall strategy of IGT is to create an integrated clinical solutions business that supports customers throughout the entire minimally invasive procedure and beyond.
The FORS venture is an entrepreneurial, multidisciplinary team positioned as a start-up embedded within IGT. Our main goal is to build new business opportunities and acquire new skills, while leveraging the competencies of the broader Philips organization. We focus on procedure innovation and new business model development by creating novel solutions to navigate and position minimally-invasive devices based on Fiber Optic RealShape (FORS) technology.

To succeed in this role, you should have the following skills and experience
MSc or PhD in Physics, with an optics related specialization.
Handson experience with (fiber) optics, lasers and optical sensing/imaging techniques, including design and construction of optical (sub)systems for prototypes or products.
Capability to design, build and validate special purpose optomechanical setups, required for optimizing and/or enabling our FORS product manufacturing processes.
Capability to evaluate, judge and/or re-design/engineer optical (sub)systems designed by others.
Team player, capable to work in multidisciplinary teams.
Experience with (medical) product development projects, from initial concept up to and including release for delivery is considered a plus.
Curious, proactive, fast learner able to quickly pick up new areas, challenging the way things are done.
Result driven, hands-on, getting things done mentality.
Passionate personality with outstanding communication and interpersonal skills.
This is an onsite role for 5 days a week.
