Role Summary:

Reporting to the Head of Investments, Manulife Life Japan (MLJ), this role will be a member of the MLJ General Account Investments, which is responsible for the management and oversight of all MLJ’s General account portfolios, covering a broad range of asset classes including global public and private debt, public and private equities, as well as other alternative investments.

This position is responsible for supporting Head of Investments and MLJ investment team to oversee and develop general account investments strategy for MLJ’s overall portfolios. The incumbent is accountable for on investment performance monitoring, compliance with regulations and internal investment guidelines, and communication of investment activities and results to MLJ senior management.

As a client-centric investment professional, the incumbent will closely collaborate with Manulife’s general account investment desks, Asset Liability Management and/or other functional areas at the business unit, regional, and group levels in the development and implementation of investment strategies, tactical portfolio optimization, and delivery of product pricing and other investment-related support to help achieve MLJ’s business objectives.

Job Description:

  • Oversee and proactively monitor the investment portfolios/mandates outsourced to different investment managers, rebalance the allocation to different mandates to optimize risk-adjusted returns with the support of the Asia General Account Portfolio Management Team, and ensure that the overall investment portfolios are in compliance with all applicable segment- and entity-level investment, guidelines and parameters
  • Implement tactical asset allocation calls that optimize the overall investment returns
  • Contribute to ALM-led investment strategy design and review
  • Liaise with business unit functional areas, such as Product, Marketing, Actuarial, Finance and Legal to provide integrated investment support, including, but not limited to, capital review, surveillance of and compliance with investment-related regulatory requirements
  • Support the Japan Asset Liability Management Committee, Japan Corporate Finance Committee and Board Committee processes and provide investment updates, with good understanding of the investment strategies, capital requirement, risk and business objectives
  • Evaluate new asset classes, portfolio strategies and hedging strategies
  • Overseeing investment outsourcing arrangements, including review and maintenance of investment management, advisory, and service level agreements, annual due diligence
  • Recommend changes to investment guidelines and policies as appropriate
  • Contribute to competitor analysis through surveillance of industry trends, market information and best practices
  • Ensure accounting, tax, local capital and regulatory requirements in Japan are well considered, understanding and properly addressed in the investment process

Skills and Experience:

  • 5+ years of investment experience in the insurance or institutional asset management industry
  • University degree, preferably in Economics, Finance or Business Administration
  • Professional degree preferable (CFA, CPA)
  • Fluency in Japanese; ability to speak and write good English
  • Demonstrated self-starter and team player with collaborative mindset
  • Good verbal, written communication skills, effective negotiating skills
  • Ability to work steadfastly, flexibly and efficiently in a fast-paced environment
  • Great attention to details. Strong analytical and problem solving skills, and ability to manage multiple tasks

Salary: 

Based on our Work Rules, we will consider your experience, skills and knowledge when we decide the salary. 

Commutation allowance and Variable Incentive Bonus are paid based on our Work Rules. 

Working Hours: 

Standard Working Hours: 9:00am - 5:00pm  (Include 1 hour break. Flex-time system available)
