About the Job:

The Red Hat Kpatch and Live Patching team is looking for a Software Quality Engineer to join us in Waterford, Ireland. In this role, you will help us develop and test live kernel patching tooling and infrastructure to modify running systems without restarting. You will be working with a team of talented kernel developers, helping to create the next generation of kernel patching tools. As a  Software Quality Engineer, you'll contribute to the live patching codebase, working as part of a team based around the world.

What will you do?

  • Responsible for maintaining and updating the automated testing pipeline for Red Hat Kernel Livepatching testing project, debugging any new or existing issue to optimize testing performance.

  • Conduct test planning for Red Hat Kpatch products to satisfy security, user and capacity requirements.

  • Run long term testing projects to analyze system stability and capacity when loaded with Red Hat Kernel Livepatching products. 

  • Configure and manage testing systems and individual testing machines, using various testing techniques to obtain and analyze results.

  • Design specific testing plans for different Red Hat Kernel projects on different systems and determine test passing criteria.

  • Monitor testing infrastructure, report and debug any issues to ensure testing specifications are met for Red Hat Kernel project on the testing infrastructure level.

  • Own Red Hat Kernel product bugs and determine testing requirements for system layouts and configurations.

  • Communicate with managers to determine purchases of any new equipment to expand the Red Hat Kernel project supporting matrix and maintain proper testing environment for hardware.

What will you bring?

  • Proficiency with the C programming language

  • Strong knowledge of Linux scripting tools like Bash or Python

  • Knowledge of or experience with Linux and Unix kernel programming and internals

  • Experience with Git

  • Outstanding problem-solving and collaboration skills

  • Ability to set priorities, meet deadlines, and work with minimal supervision

  • Motivated and dedicated to learning

The following skills are considered a plus:

  • Knowledge of Linux live patching open source project

  • Experience with ftrace or kprobe

  • Experience with the Executable and Linkable Format (ELF)

  • Experience with the Assembly language

  • Familiarity with open source projects

  • Experience with the quality engineering test and release procedures
